STUDENT LIFE

Community Garden

Growing Together

In Fall 2021, we proudly launched the Saint James School Community Garden, in loving memory of Mark Selbee. The vision for this multi-year endeavor is to enrich academic learning and provide student-grown, nutrient-rich food that can be served in The Commons as part of our school dining program.

The community garden provides a vibrant, outdoor space for learning, enhances opportunities for community-building and recreation, strengthens lessons on environmental stewardship, and gives students ownership in growing healthy produce. Over time, students from Pre-K2 through 12th grade will participate in the gardening experiences this beautiful space provides and discover the value of having access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.

Some of the amazing features of this community-friendly space include:

  • Butterfly garden
  • Numerous raised beds for growing food and conducting class experiments
  • Fully integrated irrigation system
  • Covered pavilion for outdoor classes and community events

Soon, we will also add mature fruit-bearing trees and a usable indoor space for year-round gardening.

The Saint James School Community Garden provides endless opportunities to enhance our learning experiences and to engage students in contributing to the school’s dining program.
