High School Speech and Debate at Saint James School

Since its inception, Saint James School’s forensics has been one of the most successful teams in the state, competing annually on a national level.

Forensics, also known as speech and debate, helps students develop skills in researching, thinking on their feet, and communicating at a high level. Participation in the program has been proven to build confidence, boost classroom performance, improve communication, and increase critical thinking skills to prepare students for college. These life skills are vital to a young person’s success in the future.

Students that show ability, discipline, and strong ethics and conduct will have a chance to compete at the regional and national level, potentially traveling to such places as Harvard University and Chicago in any given year. Additionally, we travel to numerous regional tournaments. A forensics course is offered as an academic elective for students in grades 9-12 and a 9-week term exploratory class for eighth grade.

In an academic setting, forensics refers to competitive speech and debate rather than forensic science. Students prepare speeches, interpret published material, analyze current events, and present arguments before judges and fellow competitors.

Speech events emphasize effective communication and persuasive delivery, while debate events ask students to examine multiple sides of an issue and build compelling arguments supported by research. Both categories strengthen public speaking skills, critical thinking, listening, organization, and confidence.

The Saint James speech and debate program gives students an encouraging environment in which to find their voice. As students prepare for a public speaking event or competitive debate, they learn how to organize ideas, evaluate evidence, and communicate with purpose.

These abilities extend well beyond the debate team. Students can apply them when writing essays, delivering classroom presentations, interviewing for college opportunities, and participating in their communities.

Saint James introduces middle school students to forensics through a nine week exploratory class offered in eighth grade. This experience allows students to practice public speaking, learn the foundations of argumentation, and determine whether they would like to continue with the student debate program in high school.

A forensics course is offered as an academic elective for students in grades 9 through 12. High school students receive instruction and practice as they develop their abilities in speech, interpretation, and competitive debate.

Competitive speech and debate includes several categories designed to match different interests and strengths. Debate formats may include policy debate, Lincoln Douglas debate, congressional debate, public forum, and world schools debate. These events encourage students to research societal problems, consider philosophical questions, follow current events, and present arguments from different perspectives.

Speech events may include original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and impromptu speaking. Interpretation events can include dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, traditional poetry, and the performance of published material. Event offerings and tournament categories may vary, but each format gives students an opportunity to strengthen their individual voice.

Students who enjoy acting and character development may gravitate toward interpretation events. Those who enjoy research, global events, and structured argument may prefer high school debate. Others may discover an interest in original spoken word poetry or public address events. Coaches help students identify opportunities that complement their talents and goals.

High school speech and debate gives students more than an opportunity to compete. It helps them become confident thinkers who can communicate ideas with clarity, listen to opposing viewpoints, and approach difficult questions with curiosity.
