Student Community Engagement at Saint James School in Montgomery, AL

Giving is part of who we are. Saint James School’s emphasis on community engagement promotes meaningful learning experiences for our students and strengthens partnerships within our community. Our division-level and school-wide community engagement initiatives promote a deeper understanding of service and develop an awareness of the needs of those around us. From our youngest learners in elementary school to our high school seniors, Saint James Students grow through giving, stewardship, and connection.

Some of the most meaningful lessons at Saint James take root outside the classroom. Launched in the fall of 2021 in loving memory of Mark Selbee, our community garden gives students of all ages, from Pre-K2 through 12th grade, a hands-on space to learn, grow, and give back. As they plant, tend, and harvest, students gain access to healthy foods and a sense of ownership in the produce they grow, supporting their well-being along the way.

The nutritious produce students grow is served in The Commons as part of our school dining program. This gives students a direct role in providing nutritious meals for community members, reinforcing healthy habits while helping them build relationships and strengthen connections across the school.

The garden includes several features that make it a hub for learning and community events:

• A butterfly garden
• Numerous raised beds for growing food and conducting class experiments
• A fully integrated irrigation system
• A covered pavilion for outdoor classes and community events

Together, these spaces foster hands-on learning and shared activities that bring students, families, and faculty together.

At Saint James, community service is closely tied to how students grow as leaders. Our honor societies are student organizations that recognize outstanding achievement while encouraging members to serve others, lead with integrity, and contribute to the life of the school and the broader Montgomery community. Together, they help foster a culture of service and leadership development.

Students in the National Junior Honor Society are recognized for scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Members learn that achievement is measured not only by grades, but by how they serve others and support the people around them. As they take on leadership roles, they build the skills and confidence to lead real change through service, forming habits that serve them well in high school, college, and beyond.

The National Honor Society continues this tradition, recognizing students who demonstrate scholarship, leadership, service, and character. For students preparing for college and committed to giving back, these experiences help build leadership skills and a strong record of community involvement, reinforcing the idea that academic achievement and responsibility go hand in hand.
